Short answer: in most cases you can put a higher capacity battery on a radio, as long as two things are true. One, the voltage is the same as the original. Two, it physically fits the radio. If both check out, a higher capacity battery is basically a bigger fuel tank. The radio doesn’t know or care about mAh — it just draws what it needs.
Here’s the deal with mAh: it’s the fuel capacity. A 2000mAh battery lasts roughly twice as long as a 1000mAh pack of the same voltage, so an extended battery is an easy upgrade — usually bigger and a bit heavier, but worth it for long shifts. Fire crews, event staff, site workers — a lot of them run extended packs as standard.
The warnings are real, though. Don’t just buy any pack with the same connector — the connector can fit while the chemistry or voltage is wrong. A bigger battery might not fit under your holster or it might stick out the back, so check dimensions if you use a chest pack or a case. And an extended battery often charges slower on some chargers. That’s normal, not a fault.
