Most walkie talkie battery not charging cases are dirty contacts, a dead charger, or a pack that’s just done — in that order.
Alright, the checklist. Start with the boring stuff: the contacts. The little metal strips on the battery and in the charger get dirty, greasy, or corroded, and then the charger never detects the battery at all — light stays red or doesn’t turn on. Wipe both sides with a dry cloth or a pencil eraser. You’d be shocked how often that fixes it.
Next, the charger itself. Plug a known-good battery in. If it still won’t charge, the charger might be the problem — cheap chargers die, and cords fail right at the connector. Try a different outlet too, because some chargers refuse to work off a weird power strip or a dimmed USB port. And make sure the charger is the right one for your battery — a mismatched charger is a classic battery won’t charge cause.
Then the battery. A lithium pack that sat at empty for months may be below the voltage where the charger will even touch it, and some chargers just refuse. That’s usually not fixable at home, honestly. Swollen or warm batteries are the same deal — replace, don’t fiddle. And if the battery is old and holds no charge at all, it’s time.
One more: the radio itself. If the radio shows charging but dies anyway, it might be the radio’s charging circuit, not the battery. To be fair, that’s less common, but it happens.
