FRS in the US and PMR446 in Europe are the main license free walkie talkie channels, MURS is the third option worth knowing.
License free walkie talkie channels are more limited than you’d think, and knowing which band your radio uses matters if you travel with it.
In the US, FRS channels are the classic family walkie talkie band. Twenty-two channels, half a watt of power, no license, no tests. Any FRS radio talks to any other FRS radio from any brand. That’s the beauty of a standardized band, grab any two radios and they pair up.
MURS is the quieter workhorse band. Five channels, up to two watts, and this is the good part, you can use bigger antennas on MURS, so it reaches further. No license needed there either.
If you’re in Europe, PMR446 channels are your answer. Sixteen channels, half a watt, license free. The catch with PMR446 channels: they’re legal in the UK and EU, but those same radios are illegal to transmit on in the US. Nobody tells you this but frequencies are national territory. A radio bought for one country may not be legal in another.
