Privacy codes on consumer radios? To be fair, they’re mostly a courtesy feature. They filter out other traffic on your channel so you hear less noise. But they don’t encrypt anything. A listener who knows the channel still hears everything. If someone tells you a privacy code makes your calls secret, they’re wrong.
Now, realistically, who’s listening? Mostly nobody. The odds of a random person monitoring your exact channel are low. But low odds aren’t zero, and that matters for anything sensitive. We’d never recommend discussing account numbers, addresses, or plans that matter over any open radio.
